Calculating entry scores

The methods for calculating entry scores for our undergraduate courses are based on a range of international senior secondary school, pre-university and foundation year qualifications.

GCE A-level

* Total score of a maximum of the best 3 A Level subject examinations taken within two years*.

* Score A Level grades as follows: A*(a*) = 5, A(a) = 5, B(b) = 4, C(c) = 3, D(d) = 2, E(e) = 1, U = 0.
* N (Narrow failure) & U (Unclassified) not to be included in the calculation.
* A maximum of 1 bonus point is offered when achieving A* in an A Level Subject.
* Subject examinations taken within two years may include more than one sitting. For example subject examinations in June 2012 until June 2014 are acceptable.
* Minimum English language requirement met by:
– C grade in one of the following IGCSE subjects: Literature (English) OR English Literature (offered in India only) OR First Language English 0522, OR
– B grade in IGCSE English as a Second Language, OR
– C grade in one of the following GCE O Level subjects:  English Language OR Literature in English, OR
– C grade in one of the following GCE AS Level subjects: General Paper, English language, OR Language and Literature in English (previously known as Language and Literature) OR Literature in English, OR
– E grade in one of the following GCE A Level subjects: English language or Literature in English
* Higher English language requirement met by:
– B grade in one of the following IGCSE subjects: Literature (English) OR English Literature (offered in India only) OR First Language English 0522, OR
– A grade in IGCSE English as a Second Language, OR
– B grade in one of the following GCE O Level subjects:  English Language OR Literature in English, OR
– B grade in one of the following GCE AS Level subjects: General Paper, English language, OR Language and Literature in English (previously known as Language and Literature) OR Literature in English, OR
– D grade in one of the following GCE A Level subjects: English language or Literature in English
Monash University does not accept IGCSE First Language English 0500 in meeting English language requirements as it does not contain compulsory speaking and listening components in the syllabus.
It should be noted that where an applicant has completed several measures of English proficiency over a period of time, only the most recent measure will be considered.

Australian Year 12 ATAR

Based on ATAR score as reflected on the transcript.

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education

Total of the best five subjects (Category A and C only – Category B not to be used in calculation) as awarded on the official final academic transcript issued by Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA). Scores grades as follows:  Level 1 = 1, Level 2 = 2, Level 3 = 3, Level 4 = 4, Level 5 = 5 or A = 5, B=4, C=3,  D=2,  E=1.
A maximum of 1 bonus point is offered when achieving Level 5** or Level 5* in a HKDSE Category A subject.
* Minimum English language requirement met by successful completion of HKDSE English Language with an achievement of Level 4 or above
* Higher English language requirement met by successful completion of HKDSE English Language with an achievement of Level 5 or above.

Indian School Certificate

Overall average of percentage marks for the best four academic subjects (excluding Physical Education) and result indicated as ‘PASS CERTIFICATE AWARDED’ as awarded on the official final statement of marks.
* Minimum English language requirement met by successful completion of ‘English’ with an overall average of 60% or above.
* Higher English language requirement met by successful completion of ‘English’ with an overall average of 70% or above.

All India Senior School Certificate

Overall average of percentage grades (refer to ‘TOTAL’ column) for the best four academic subjects (excluding Physical Education) and result indicated as ‘PASS’ as awarded on the official final marks statement.
* Minimum English language requirement met by successful completion of ‘English Core’ with an overall average of 60% or above.
* Higher English language requirement met by successful completion of ‘English Core’ with an overall average of 70% or above.

SMA3, Indonesia

Overall average of semester 1 and semester 2 grade 12 results (refer to the ‘angka’ column) as awarded on the official final transcript issued by individual senior secondary schools. The graduation certificate (Ijazah) must be provided. All documents submitted must be translated and untranslated.
English language requirements met by submission of an IELTS or equivalent English test with the required scores.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

Total final score as shown on transcript.  Evidence of successful completion of diploma is also required.
English entry requirement met by minimum of 4 in English (SL) Or 3 (HL).

Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)

Qualification awarded from 2009 an onwards:Average score for the best seven grades (includes the compulsory subjects of English, Kiswahili and Mathematics) from 2009 onwards as awarded on the official final Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education results slip.. Prior to 2009 average score for the best eight grades.
Score grades as follows: A=12, A- =11, B+=10, B=9, B- =8, C+=7, C=6, C- =5, D+=4, D=3, D- =2, E=1.
* Minimum English language requirement met by successful completion of ‘English’ with an overall achievement of B grade or above.
* Higher English language requirement met by successful completion of ‘English’ with an overall achievement of A grade or above.

STPM, Malaysia

Total of the best 3 subjects (refer to ‘Nilai Gred Mata Pelajaran’ column) excluding Pengajian Am (General Studies) as awarded on the official final academic transcript. The translated and untranslated final STPM result slip issued by Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia must be submitted.
* Minimum English language requirement met by C grade in GCE O Level English Language – 1119 (SPM)
* Higher English language requirement met by B grade in GCE O Level English Language – 1119 (SPM)

UEC, Malaysia

Average of the best 5 subjects. Only grades A1, A2, B3, B4, B5 and B6 to be included in calculation. C7, C8 and F9 can not be included in the calculation.
Score grades as follows: A1=1, A2=2, B3=3, B4=4, B5=5, B6=6. It should be noted that a score of A1 is the highest score.
Note:  All undergraduate degrees offered by Monash University Malaysia require five subjects with any grade B or better.
English language requirements met by submission of an IELTS or equivalent English test with the required scores.

Ontario Secondary School Diploma

Overall average of percentage grades for the best six academic Grade 12 subjects (excluding workplace preparation courses and open courses) as awarded on the Ontario Student Transcript. Students must achieve a minimum total of 30 credits and complete Community Involvement. Evidence of successful completion must be provided.
* Minimum English language requirement met by successful completion of Grade 12 ‘English’ with an overall average of 50% or above.
* Higher English language requirement met by successful completion of Grade 12 ‘English’ with an overall average of 60% or above.

Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)

Total of Critical Reading, Mathematics and Writing scores awarded on the final SAT examination issued by The College Board. Official final academic transcript and Diploma Certificate for the American High School Diploma (or equivalent Australian Year 12 qualification) mustbe submitted.
Additional Requirements:
* The American High School Diploma cannot be accepted independently for admission into Monash University.
* Schools that offer the American High School Diploma in the United States of America must be listed as accredited on the National Center for Education Statistics at https://nces.ed.gov/globallocator/
* Schools that offer the American High School Diploma outside the United States of America must be accredited by the Advanced Ed or an equivalent regional accrediting agency in the United States of America as follows:

  • Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
  • New England Association of Schools and Colleges
  • North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
  • Northwest Accreditation Commission
  • Western Association of Schools and Colleges
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools).

* Students who have undertaken the SAT examination with another international qualification (equivalent to an Australian Year 12) may be considered for Monash University undergraduate admission, however only the most recent qualification will be used to determine whether the applicant has met the entry requirements.
English Language Requirement for the American High School Diploma for a 100% (70% pass) grading scale as follows:
* Minimum English language requirement met by successful completion of Grade 12 English with an overall average of 70% or above.
* Higher English language requirement met by successful completion of Grade 12 English with an overall average of 80% or above.
English Language Requirement for the American High School Diploma for a 100% (60% pass) grading scale as follows:
* Minimum English language requirement met by successful completion of Grade 12 English with an overall average of 60% or above.
* Higher English language requirement met by successful completion of Grade 12 English with an overall average of 70% or above.
English Language Requirement for the American High School Diploma for a 100% (65% pass) grading scale as follows:
* Minimum English language requirement met by successful completion of Grade 12 English with an overall average of 65% or above.
* Higher English language requirement met by successful completion of Grade 12 English with an overall average of 75% or above.

National Senior Certificate, South Africa (awarded from 2009 and onwards)

Total of the best 6 subjects (excluding Life Orientation) as awarded on the official final transcript issued by the Umalusi or Independent Examining Board. A maximum of 2 bonus points is offered for achieving:
English Home Language achievement of Level 6 or above = +1
Mathematics achievement of  Level 6 or above = +1
Mathematical Literacy achievement of  Level 6 or above = +1
* Minimum English language requirement met by successful completion of ‘English Home Language’ with an achievement of Level 4 or above.

* Higher English language requirement met by successful completion of ‘English Home Language’ with an achievement of Level 5 or above.
